Heat Exchanger Manufacturer Shares Knowledge on Reboiler Heat Exchangers

Heat Exchanger Manufacturer with a kettle reboiler heat exchanger from Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger.Bendel Tank and Heat Exchanger is a leading heat exchanger manufacturer.  We routinely receive questions from our clients about various types of heat exchangers and how they may fit into the heat exchanger manufacturer process.  One of our recent clients came to us with questions on distillation column reboilers.

Reboilers are heat exchangers typically used to provide heat to the bottom of industrial distillation columns. They boil the liquid from the bottom of a distillation column to generate vapors which are returned to the column to drive the distillation separation.

Proper reboiler operation is vital to effective distillation. In a typical classical distillation column, all the vapor driving the separation comes from the reboiler. The reboiler receives a liquid stream from the column bottom and may partially or completely vaporize that stream. Steam usually provides the heat required for the vaporization. The most critical element of reboiler design is the selection of the proper type of reboiler for a specific service. Most reboilers are of the shell and tube heat exchanger type and normally steam is used as the heat source in such reboilers.

Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger notes the most commonly-used type of reboilers include:
  • Kettle reboilers.  Kettle reboilers are very simple and reliable.  In this reboiler type, steam flows through the tube Heat Exchanger Manufacturer Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger with the fired reboiler heat exchanger.bundle and exits as condensate. The liquid from the bottom of the tower, commonly called the bottoms, flows through the shell side.
  • Thermosyphon reboilers.  These do not require pumping of the column bottoms liquid into the reboiler. Natural circulation is obtained by using the density difference between the reboiler inlet column bottoms liquid and the reboiler outlet liquid-vapor mixture to provide sufficient liquid head to deliver the tower bottoms into the reboiler. Thermosyphon reboilers (also known as calandrias) are more complex than kettle reboilers and require more attention from the plant operators.
  • Fired reboilers.  Fired heaters (furnaces) may be used as a distillation column reboiler. A pump is required to circulate the column bottoms through the heat transfer tubes in the furnace’s convection and radiant sections. The heat source for the fired heater reboiler may be either fuel gas or fuel oil. Coal would rarely, if ever, be used as the fuel for a fired heater reboiler.
  • Forced circulation reboilers.  This type of reboiler uses a pump to circulate the column bottoms liquid through the reboilers. It should be noted steam is not the only heat source that can be used. Any fluid stream at a high enough temperature could be used for any of the many shell and tube heat exchanger reboiler types.

Steel Storage Tank Manufacturers Trace Roots Back to 1859 for early Steel Storage Tank Designs.

Steel storage tank manufacturing from Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger in Charlotte, NC.Every manufacturing industry has a beginning or a single activity that sparked the very roots that we can trace back.  For the storage tank manufacturing industry, those roots have been traced back to 1859 during the initial oil refining movement to illuminate oil lamps.  Of course all of that changed with the invention and mass introduction of electricity.

The history “stories” have it that the early automotive industry really sparked the need to store small amounts of oil for the manufacturing and operating of early automotive machines.  Thus the early storage tank manufacturing need arose from this initial oil storage demand.

With the growing need of storage tank manufacturing came the immediate need to establish industry standards and practices.  Safety of storing the material was job number one.  In early 1916 a group of Midwestern steel manufacturers got together and established the National Steel Tank Association, which today is known as STI.  Their initial goals were tStainless steel storage tank manufacturers Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger.o promote industry safety and manufacturing standards, education, quality certification, and the general promotion of steel to be used as the material of choice for storage of products.

Around 1925, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) published its first storage tank manufacturing edition of their UL 58 publication.  Also in the early 1900′s, the National Board of Fire Underwriters initiated industry standards for the protection of the public and firefighters from hazardous fires.  Their NBFU 30 document established safety standards for storing flammable materials in less than 250 gallon-sized storage tanks.

The first steel storage tanks actually used rivets to seam the steel together.  These tanks were less than 1,000 gallons and were prone to corrosion, especially as they were put underground.

Beginnings are interesting to uncover and interesting to discuss.  If your company is in need of stainless steel storage tank design, fabrication and manufacturing, please contact Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger at 866-596-5112 or email Vince Petrucci or Vivek Patel at Bendel.  We look forward to talking with you soon!

Pressure Vessel Manufacturing & Fabrication Leaders to Meet at PVMA in Fall 2011

Pressure Vessel design and fabrication from Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger.Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger enjoys keeping our customers and website visitors up-to-date on key industry events and meetings as they pertain to storage tank, pressure vessel and heat exchanger fabrication and manufacture organizations.  This particular post is an update on the PVMA Fall 2011 meeting in Columbus, OH, September 26-27, 2011.

Regularly scheduled PVMA meetings serve as a focal point for programs and activities. PVMA meets at least two times each year. The annual meeting, usually held in March, blends three days of business and leisure activities at a resort location. A one-day business meeting is held in September.

Regular business is the focus of each meeting. Business is conducted by committees and special interest groups. All members have an opportunity to participate. The committees and groups address the issues, discuss industry matters and recommend direction for the Association.

There are two key working groups: The Technical and Code Issues Group, and the Member Services Committee which addresses membership growth and benefit issues.
