Heat Exchanger Manufacturers for Petrochemical and Pharmaceutical Industries

Heat Exchanger Manufacturer Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger in Charlotte, NC would like to help youHeat Exchanger manufacturers Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger in Charlotte, NC.learn more about our heat exchanger manufacturing program.  In general our heat exchangers are termed according to their flow arrangements, and they are usually designed to maximize the surface area of the walls between two fluids.

In shell & tube Heat exchangers, there are a series of tubes. One unit has fluids that is either heated or cooled while second unit which runs over the tubes can either give heat or absorb heat to carry the process.  In shell-and-tube exchangers, many tubes are mounted inside a shell; one fluid flows in the tubes and the other flows in the shell, outside the tubes.

Heat Exchangers are extensively used in Industry for cooling & heating in large scale process and systems. If there is waste of energy which can be recovered, it can be used to heat different processes without phase change.

Heat Exchangers include boilers, evaporators, superheaters, condensers, and coolers. These unique pieces of equipment are ideally used in various fertilizer, chemical, petrochemical, automobile and cement industries.

Heat Exchanger Manufacturers & Heat Exchanger Engineer Spotlight

Heat exchanger manufacturers Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger in Charlotte, NC and Houston, TX.Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers are used in applications where the demands from high temperatures and pressures are significant.  Bendel manufactures heat exchangers for industries like power plants, chemical plants, petrochemical plants, petroleum refineries, natural gas processing, and sewage treatment.

The basic heat exchanger manufactured at Bendel is a piece of equipment built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. The media may be separated by a solid wall, so that they never mix, or they may be in direct contact.  At Bendel, we customize every heat exchanger project to the specific and demanding tasks that our heat exchanger clients need.

Our in-house engineering team stresses definition of design, testing, fabricating, and quality control at each stage of development.  We are advanced users of exceptional engineering and design software systems like HTRI, AutoCAD and Compress.

There are two primary classifications of heat exchangers according to their flow arrangement. InHeat Exchanger engineering and manufacturers with Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger.parallel-flow heat exchangers, the two fluids enter the exchanger at the same end, and travel in parallel to one another to the other side. In counter-flow heat exchangers the fluids enter the exchanger from opposite ends. The counter current design is most efficient, in that it can transfer the most heat from the heat (transfer) medium.

Shell and tube heat exchangers consist of a series of tubes. One set of these tubes contains the fluid that must be either heated or cooled. The second fluid runs over the tubes that are being heated or cooled so that it can either provide the heat or absorb the heat required. A set of tubes is called the tube bundle and can be made up of several types of tubes: plain, longitudinally finned, etc. Shell and tube heat exchangers are typically used for high-pressure applications (with pressures greater than 30 bar and temperatures greater than 260°C). This is because the shell and tube heat exchangers are robust due to their shape.

Our Quickmill Intimidator is the superior solution for large part machining and drilling accuracy. The Quickmill gives us increased production efficiency while improving the quality and performance of our Shell & Tubesheet Heat Exchangers.

Our Intimidator Gantry 96 (96″ x 185.5″) provides our craftsmen with a powerful, precise tool that performs flawlessly time after time.  Bendel even accepts drilling outsource project work where you can ship the materials to us or we can purchase and ship finished products back to you.

Heat Exchanger Fabricator Has Flow Arrangement Options

We have been posting some “behind-the-scenes” and educational information about Heat Exchangers, how they work, what is the science behind them, etc.  And now we want to take a look at “flow arrangement” and how we classify flow arrangement when fabricating our Heat Exchangers.

Parallel flow shell & tube heat exchanger fabrication from Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger in Charlotte, NC.Basically, there are two primary classifications of heat exchangers according to their flow arrangement. In parallel-flow heat exchangers (at left), the two fluids enter the exchanger at the same end, and travel in parallel to one another to the other side.

In counter-flow heat exchangers (at right) the fluids enter the exchanger from opposite endsCounter current shell & tube heat exchanger fabrication from Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger in Charlotte, NC.. The counter current design is most efficient, in that it can transfer the most heat from the heat (transfer) medium.

For efficiency, heat exchangers are designed to maximize the surface area of the wall between the two fluids, while minimizing resistance to fluid flow through the exchanger. The exchanger’s performance can also be affected by the addition of fins or corrugations in one or both directions, which increase surface area and may channel fluid flow or induce turbulence.

Cross flow shell & tube heat exchanger fabrication at Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger in Charlotte, NC.In a cross-flow heat exchanger (at left), the fluids travel roughly perpendicular to one another through the exchanger.

The driving temperature across the heat transfer surface varies with position, but an appropriate mean temperature can be defined. In most simple systems this is the “log mean temperature difference” (LMTD). Sometimes direct knowledge of the LMTD is not available and the NTU (Number of Transfer Units) method is used.

If you would like more information about our Bendel heat exchanger design and fabricating program, please call us at 866-596-5112 or contact  Vince Petrucci or Vivek Patel at Bendel.

Heat Exchanger Fouling Can be a Nightmare Maintenance Issue with Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers!

Fouling occurs when a fluid goes through the heat exchanger, and the impurities in the fluid precipitate onto the surface of the tubes. Precipitation of these impurities can be caused by:

Heat Exchanger fabrication and manufacturing company Bendel Tank & Heat Exchanger in Charlotte, NC.Effects of fouling are more abundant in the cold tubes of the heat exchanger than in the hot tubes. This is because impurities are less likely to be dissolved in a cold fluid, because for most substances, solubility increases as temperature increases. A notable exception is hard water where the opposite is true.

Fouling reduces the cross sectional area for heat to be transferred and causes an increase in the resistance to heat transfer across the heat exchanger. This is because the thermal conductivity of the fouling layer is low. This reduces the overall heat transfer coefficient and efficiency of the heat exchanger. This in turn, can lead to an increase in pumping and maintenance costs.

The conventional approach to fouling control combines the “blind” application of biocides and anti-scale chemicals with periodic lab testing. This often results in the excessive use of chemicals with the inherent side effects of accelerating system corrosion and increasing toxic waste – not to mention the cost of unnecessary treatments. There are however solutions for continuous fouling monitoring in liquid environments with sensors measuring both fouling thickness and temperature, allowing cleaning effectiveness to be monitored and chemical usage to be minimized.

U-tube Heat Exchanger Design and Fabrication from Bendel Corporation

There are several different types of shell and tube heat exchangers that Bendel designs and fabricates for clients of varying types for varying uses!  The U-tube heat exchanger is a multi-use heat exchanger that many of our clients use in their various manufacturing processes.

U-tube heat exchanger design and fabrication from Bendel Corporation in Charlotte, NC.A shell and tube heat exchanger is a class of heat exchanger designs. It is the most common type of heat exchanger in oil refineries and other large chemical processes, and is suited for higher-pressure applications. As its name implies, this type of heat exchanger consists of a shell (a large pressure vessel) with a bundle of tubes inside it. One fluid runs through the tubes, and another fluid flows over the tubes (through the shell) to transfer heat between the two fluids. The set of tubes is called a tube bundle, and may be composed by several types of tubes: plain, longitudinally finned, etc.

Two fluids, of different starting temperatures, flow through the heat exchanger. One flows through the tubes (the tube side) and the other flows outside the tubes but inside the shell (the shell side). Heat is transferred from one fluid to the other through the tube walls, either from tube side to shell side or vice verse. The fluids can be either liquids or gases on either the shell or the tube side. In order to transfer heat efficiently, a large heat transfer area should be used, leading to the use of many tubes. In this way, waste heat can be put to use. This is an efficient way to conserve energy.

Heat exchangers with only one phase (liquid or gas) on each side can be called one-phase or single-phase heat Heat Exchanger shell tube sheet fabrication from Bendel in Charlotte, NC.exchangers. Two-phase heat exchangers can be used to heat a liquid to boil it into a gas (vapor), sometimes called boilers, or cool a vapor to condense it into a liquid (called condensers), with the phase change usually occurring on the shell side. Boilers in steam engine locomotives are typically large, usually cylindrically-shaped shell-and-tube heat exchangers. In large power plants with steam-driven turbines, shell-and-tube surface condensers are used to condense the exhaust steam exiting the turbine into condensate water which is recycled back to be turned into steam in the steam generator.

There can be many variations on the shell and tube design. Typically, the ends of each tube are connected to plenums (sometimes called water boxes) through holes in tubesheets. The tubes may be straight or bent in the shape of a U, called U-tubes.

If you would like more information about our Bendel heat exchanger design and fabricating program, please call us at 866-596-5112 or contact  Vince Petrucci or Vivek Patel at Bendel.

Our own milling and drilling team is the best, too! The heat exchanger milling and drilling work is intricate and repetitive, so we rely heavily on our team to provide exceptional results day in and day out. And boy do they deliver!

The Quickmill Intimidator is the superior solution for large part machining and drilling accuracy. The Quickmill gives us increased production efficiency while improving the quality and performance of our Shell & Tubesheet Heat Exchangers.

The Intimidator Gantry 96 (96″ x 185.5″) provides our craftsmen with a powerful, precise tool that performs flawlessly time after time.
